Farm History and Stud Background

Storth Oaks was the name of the Brittain family homestead in Yorkshire where Tim’s grandfather grew up before emigrating to New Zealand in 1923.  Storth is an old Yorkshire word meaning strong. Storth Oaks New Zealand is a North Island hill country property of 384 hectares located some 20 kilometers east of Otorohanga. The predominate soil type is Mairoa Ash which is a free draining.  The average rainfall is 65 inches or 1651 mm. This winter we have farmed 800 ewes mated to a terminal sire along with calving 320 stud angus females together with their supporting stock and progeny.  In addition we winter finish 100 odd animals for slaughter on an intensive finishing system. All the cattle are farmed intensively in a commercial manner to put new genetics to the test in a steep hill country environment.  The stud was founded in 1991 with the purchase of 37 females from a local dispersal sale.  Since then along with the strategic addition from other studs much progress has been made by careful use of AI and embryo transplant technologies. Through the use of these technologies and with the assistance of others like Total Genetic Resource Management, Storth Oaks has set about creating a performance herd with leading genetics. Our objective is always a live calf as fertility is paramount, so an animal must calve easily, grow quickly and importantly have carcass attributes that will leave progeny that have the eating ability to please the discerning consumer. Extensive use of Australian and to a lesser extent American bulls has assisted in Storth Oaks having some of the best carcass animals in New Zealand. We use the AngusPure index to help our customers bring a range of important economic traits to their selection table as this index promotes a self replacing herd but also ranking highly those animals with carcass performance. The quality of our product is paramount and we back this up with all animals being DNA sire verified, and bulls being fertility and semen tested and beef class inspected by independent assessors prior to sale.
